DIY: Onboard Key Programming Procedure For GM Vehicles

Chevy Security Light ON


Key programming for GM vehicles like Chevy, GMC, Cadillac and Buick can be done at home in an easy procedure either all keys are lost or you have at least one working key.




Keyed Ignition Key

Add a Key Without A Programmed Key (All Keys Are Lost) Procedure (30min)

1) With unprogrammed key, switch the ignition to the ON position, one turn before starting the car.

2) Leave ON for 10min. After 10min the security light should go off.

3) Turn the key to the OFF position.

4) Repeat the above steps two more times.

5) Turn the ignition to the ON position for the 4th time. The security light should go off within 5sec. At this point the key is programmed to your car and you'll be able to start your car.


Add A Key Using A Programmed Key (1min)

1) With a programmed key, switch the ignition to the ON position, one turn before starting the car.

2) Leave ON until the security light goes off, should take 5sec.

3)Turn the key to the OFF position and remove key.

4) Insert the unprogrammed key and switch the ignition to the ON position. The security light should go off within 5sec. At this point the key is programmed to your car and you'll be able to start your car.

 

Keyless Entry Remote (1min)

Methos #1

1) Switch the ignition to the ON position, one turn before starting the car.

2) Scroll through the Driver's Information button (or odometer button) until display shows the following message: "RELEARN REMOTE KEY". At this time, press the check mark button once (or odometer button for 3sec) to enter remote programming mode, and the message "REMOTE KEY LEARNING ACTIVE" should appear.

3) On each remote (including previously programmed), press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons at the same time for 10sec, until you hear a chime or the door lock cycles, indicating the fob programming was successful.

4) Turn the key to the OFF position and test the remote.

*If the door lock doesn't cycle at all, remote was not accepted. Repeat process.


Keyless Entry Remote (1min)

Methos #2

1) Insert the key to the ignition switch and leave it in the OFF position.

2) Press the Driver's door unlock button, and at the same time cycle the key ON, OFF, ON, OFF and release the unlock button. At this time, you should hear a chime or the door lock will cycle, indicating you are in programming mode.

3) On each remote (including previously programmed), press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons at the same time for 10sec, until you hear a chime or the door lock cycles, indicating the fob programming was successful.

4) Open and close driver's door to exit programming mode and test the remote.

*If the door lock doesn't cycle at all, remote was not accepted. Repeat process.

 

Smart Proximity Key (Push Button Start)

Add a Key Procedure (30min)

1) Within 10sec, turn the mechanical key in driver's door lock counterclockwise for (5) times. A message will appear on the dashboard "Remote Learning".

2) Wait for 10min.

3) After 10min, close and open door, a message will appear on the dashboard "Press Start Button To Learn".

4) Press the start button once and wait 10min.

5) Repeat steps (3)+(4) two more times.

6) After 10min wait for the 3rd time, close and open the driver's door, press the start button and a message will appear on the dashboard "Ready For Remote 1". Congratulations you entered remote programming mode.

7) At this time place an unprogrammed remote in the programming slot (can be found in the center console, glove compartment, in the cup holder or under the radio depending on your model).

8) Press the start button once, a message may or may not appear on the dashboard.

9) Remove your fob from the programming slot and press the lock button once.

10) Repeat steps (7)+(8)+(9) to program additional remotes.

11) When done, long press the start button for 12sec to exit key programming mode.

12) your remotes are now programmed, verify your remote start your car.
